IFPI Hong Kong Group launching the Music Must Go On Documentary Premier Screening

In appreciation of the support by all participants and fans

 

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (Hong Kong Group) Limited (IFPI Hong Kong Group) is pleased to announce that its project The Music Must Go On 2020 will be completed by 31st May, 2021.  Such fruitful result was made possible through the support and sponsorship by Create Hong Kong (“CreateHK”) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the Lead Sponsor, as well as other industry associations including the Hong Kong Recording Industry Alliance Limited (HKRIA) and the Music Publishers Association of Hong Kong Limited (MPA) as Supporting Organisations.

As Hong Kong’s unique solution to foster confidence in music investment during the pandemic, The Music Must Go On 2020 began its preparation work back  in mid-2020.  Launched in last October, the project amassed industry-wide participation in providing music entertainment to audiences and, through re-creation of classic local popular hits, created jobs for the local music practitioners who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.  The project brought inspiration, encouragement and hope for the industry. During the year, sentiment towards the project expressed by participating artistes, producers and professional musicians was recorded under a documentary entitled “Chronicle of The Music Must Go On 2020”, which captured a moment in time to show how the Hong Kong recording industry pieced together such unique industry relief in a concerted manner.

The premiere screening of “Chronicle of The Music Must Go On 2020” documentary was held at the K11 MUSEA Art House White Box in Tsim Sha Tsui on 31st May, 2021 with invited guests of artistes, press and media.  This paved the way for the release of the full documentary on music media and the Internet shortly afterwards. The event was also a great time to conclude the project for the Organizer to thank all participating parties in a meaningful way.

Mr. Gary Chan, Chairman of IFPI Hong Kong Group expressed at the premiere that, “After we launched the “The Music Must Go On”, we received many enquires as well as praises from foreign and local media and musicians. With such encouragement, we will study how to further develop the project and promote Hong Kong’s music.”

Ms. Jersey Yuen, Assistant Head of Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region also thanked the IFPI Hong Kong Group for organising the project and the staunch support of all music parties and the media in accomplishing the satisfactory outcome.

They remarked that The Music Must Go On 2020 enabled them to regain the joy in music creation, which prompted them to rethink the influence and importance of the Hong Kong music industry.  The 113 songs produced under the project were made popular beyond Hong Kong by media such as Fairchild Radio in Canada and Guangzhou Auto Radio, which attested the value of local musicians in contributing to the fame of the Hong Kong repertoire.

The Music Must Go On 2020 re-made Chinese golden melodies that spanned over the last 40 years and resulted in 113 new recordings of favorite melodies, each embracing old and new elements in creativity.  The project brought together a total of 98 artistes and bands, involving 55 local labels, producing works by 93 local composers/writers, and creating no fewer than 800 external jobs.

IFPI Hong Kong Group viewed the premiere of the “Chronicle of The Music Must Go On 2020” as a milestone in Hong Kong music. The project instilled new thinking in creativity, which is valuable to enhance competition in the market.  The winning of new fans’ support by the new recordings also means the upward spiral effect may just happen for Hong Kong music to go on and on

“Chronicle of The Music Must Go On 2020” will be released in early June 2021 on myTV SUPER (free zone), Hong Kong’s largest digital music platform^ MOOV App, moov-music.com, MOOV MV channel (nowTV CH168) and Fairchild TV in Canada.
